Sweden, Norway punish UNDP

 
The UN Development Program (UNDP) has seen its two best friends, Norway and Sweden, cut funding this fall in an attempt to press the agency to perform better.  The moves were not coordinated; the two Nordic donors arrived at their conclusions independently.

In the wake of the financial meltdown of 2008, Icelandic aid took a big hit. Foreign Minister Skarphéðinsson says it could not be avoided at the time. Now Iceland has a new aid strategy and has begun the long climb to 0.7% of GNI.

The donor index of the Washington-based think tank CGD puts Denmark in first place this year. Nordics tend to score best overall, in spite of dismal marks in sectors like trade, agriculture and weapons exports.
